| St.
Michael is a small community school situated in the vicinity
of the hospitals. The school is located in a quiet residential
area with trees and bush surrounding the playground. The school
has a population of 106 students. There are 6 classes from
JK to grade 6, including a Communication Class. Along with
the classroom teachers, the support staff consists of a principal,
a secretary, a Core French teacher, Itinerant teachers, an
Educational Assistant and a custodian. St. Michael the Archangel,
is represented on our crest and we are known as “The
St. Michael Spirits”. The staff and students are familiar
with all their peers and an atmosphere of care and concern
prevails.
The St.
Michael Catholic School Council will nurture our school community
where Catholic education and religious activity are major
focal points and where the value and talents of individuals
are recognized and utilised in an atmosphere of team work.
Our Catholic faith calls to us to recognize all people in
our community:
- there is great importance in encouraging people to grow
spiritually
-to feel important to our community by allowing them to contribute
- to have leadership to give our school focus and direction
- to examine our progress to establish if the agreed upon
goals have been accomplished.
St. Michael School benefits from the participation of volunteers
in the school. Students from Cambrian College, Laurentian
University and St. Benedict’s Catholic Secondary School
help out on a regular basis. Also, the library is maintained
by three parent volunteers. Volunteers are also evident on
special occasions such as hot dog days, field trips, play
days, to name a few. Teachers supervise noon hour sports and
coach various sports teams (ie., volley-ball, soccer). Mrs.
Udeschini, another parent-volunteer, conducts dance classes
twice a week during the lunch hour recess and Mrs. Henry directs
the junior choir.
Mass and prayer services are held in our school gym on a
regular basis. We are blessed to have Father Tony from Christ
the King Church celebrate mass with us. He also visits with
students and staff and we look forward to seeing him.
The community is also involved. Three times a week, the gym
is used for exercise classes. The grade 5/6 class was involved
with the V.I.P.- Values, Influences and Peers Program with
the Sudbury Regional Police and the Self-esteem workshop presented
by the Sudbury & District Health Unit. We are part of
the “Healthy Schools” Program and we benefit from
the many services offered by the staff at the Sudbury &District
Health Unit. Presentations have been given by staff from Laurentian
University, Sudbury Hydro, the Art Gallery , a lawyer, Big
Brothers Association and the Laurentian Lake Conservation
staff.
The St. Michael Catholic School Council is very active. In
the past they have endorsed the Code of Behaviour , wrote
a vision statement along with the by-laws. Presently the Council
is concerned about the St. Michael school playground. As it
has been past practice for the last 8 years, the Council is
busy working on the St. Michael Christmas Market, held every
November. This is a major fundraiser for our school.
St. Michael School is very vibrant and positive. This is
evident from the range of initiatives in which the school
is involved. This vibrancy is also evident in the activities
at the school. Students are eager to be nominated for the
“Caught You Being Good” award and the “Student
of the Month” awards. There are also various activities
in which our students participate: Topper’s Pizza “Feed
Your Mind” Program, Chess Club, Floor Hockey, Beachball
Volleyball, Track & Field, etc.
We have also entered a number of events. Last year St. Michael’s
School won the “Most Improved” award for the Sudbury
Catholic District School Board’s Math Challenge competition.
This school year, some classes will participate in the Regional
Heritage Fair. Other students have been recognized for their
artistic work.
We are all very proud of our school and students! It’s
a great place to be because St. Michael is “a jewel
of a school”.
